Dayton, Ohio - Narissa Suber and Gabriela Marginean put in 14 points each but an icy 27.6 percent shooting performance proved to be Drexel's (0-4) downfall as Dayton (3-3) pulled away midway through the first half and never looked back in a 62-46 win. Senior guard Kira Karlstrom pulled down a career-high 12 boards in the game and also led the team with five assists. All-Atlantic 10 forward Jennifer Strong led Dayton with 16 points.
Drexel came out with confidence and found shots from outside early. Narissa and Anora Suber knocked down three-pointers to give the Dragons a lead at the 14:23 mark. The team would hold an advantage until midway through the first period when Dayton's Kiki Lund and Jennifer Strong hit back-to-back three-pointers that keyed an 8-0 run from which the Dragons would not recover.
After a 7-for-26 shooting performance in the first half, the Dragons found themselves trailing 31-19. Marginean, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, led the team with eight points going into the locker room but Dayton capitalized on eight Drexel turnovers to score nine points, the vast majority of the 12-point margin. Strong scored 13 of her 16 points in the first period, including a 3-for-5 shooting performance from deep.
The Flyers closed the door on another Drexel comeback when they went on a 6-0 spurt to open the second period and wielded a 20-point lead for most of the second half. A pair of three-pointers by Narissa Suber, which helped to trim the lead to 15 points, were quickly answered by treys from Kathy Guin. Brittany Holterman, who came off a career-best 20-point performance in the Flyers' last game, scored eight of her nine points in the second half. Holterman's dominance in the post contributed to Dayton's 28-18 advantage in points-in-the-paint.
Suber would close out the game with nine of her 14 points in the second stanza to cap her best shooting night of the young season, shooting 4-for-10 from deep. Nine of the 5-foot-4 Karlstrom's career-high 12 rebounds came in the second half. The Flyers still managed t o edge the Dragons on the boards 41-38. Dayton also knocked down 44 percent of its shots from the floor while Drexel connected with just 27.6 percent of its launches from the field.
Junior Stacy McCullough saw her first playing time of the season in the contest. McCullough was on the floor for the Dragons for the first time since going down with a season-ending injury against Temple in the second game last season.
Drexel returns to the Daskalakis Athletic Center to take on Lehigh at 1:00 on Sunday, Nov. 26.
